The Oxford University Dancesport Team (OUDT) is one of the most successful
sporting teams in the University. Members compete at a minimum of six major UK
competitions each year. We have been Intercontinental Champions for the last
ten years, British University National Champions 2000-2005 (runners up 2006,
2007) and Varsity Champions against Cambridge for seven of the last eight
years. In fact, OUDT has been placed either first or second in the British
University National Championships for the past twenty years.
Our Blues Squad is made up of 24 very dedicated couples, selected from the 1500-
strong parent club. The University awards ‘Blues’ status to an elite group of sports that achieves a
significantly higher level of achievement relative to the national average. Dancers commit to hours of practice each day, finding the
time around study out of a love of the sport.
The team is regularly hired for corporate entertainment. We can perform spectacular demonstrations of all the dances that appear on 'Strictly Come Dancing.' The team has previously been
invited to perform at London Fashion Week, Royal Academy of Art exhibitions
and the Wings of Hope Charity Ball. We have even been asked to perform as far
afield as Dubai or Bombay. Click here for more information.
While the Blues Squad is one of the leading teams in the country, we have a
strong tradition of nurturing and developing newcomers to the sport. We try to
offer the opportunity to learn to dance competitively to as many students as
we can, always striving to share the sport with more young people. Each year we host a Beginners Team of around 100 talented people aimed at those who have never danced ballroom or latin before.
Some of our ex-couples have gone on to have significant successes on the open
circuit after leaving the team including reaching the top ten nationally in
several different categories. Many of them now consistently compete at both
national and international events.
